Denied or underpaid insurance claim help in Hawaiʻi

A denial letter or a low first payment is the insurance company’s position, not always the final word. Many denied and underpaid property claims can be reviewed, reopened or supplemented. Island Claims is a licensed Hawaiʻi public adjusting firm that works for you, not the insurer.

What we handle

What we look at when a claim goes wrong

We compare what happened, what your policy says and what the insurer decided, and show you where they do not line up.

Denied claims

We read the denial letter against your actual policy language and the evidence of what happened.

If your claim was denied

Underpaid claims

Missing rooms, missed damage, low unit prices and skipped steps add up. We go through the estimate line by line.

Challenging an underpaid claim

Delayed claims

Unanswered calls, repeat document requests and a claim that is not moving.

What to say to the adjuster

Re-inspections and supplements

Asking for a second look and submitting the damage that was missed the first time.

Depreciation holdbacks

Replacement cost policies often hold back depreciation until repairs are done. Make sure you recover it.

Appraisal and next steps

When the dispute is about the amount, many policies have an appraisal clause. When it is about the law, talk to an attorney.

Why it matters

Most problems are found in the details

Claims get denied or underpaid for many reasons: damage blamed on wear and tear, the wrong policy applied, missed areas of damage, or prices that do not match what repairs cost in Hawaiʻi. Many of those can be answered with better documentation.

Your policy also has deadlines, including time limits to reopen a claim or to bring a dispute. Look for them in your policy and in your insurer’s letters, and do not wait to get a second opinion.

Common questions

Denied or underpaid claims FAQs

Not always. Ask for the denial in writing with the exact policy language it relies on. Many denials can be challenged with better documentation, a re-inspection or a reconsideration request.
Compare the insurer’s estimate with your own contractor’s estimate, room by room and line by line. Look for missing areas, low prices, skipped steps like drying or removal, and depreciation that was held back.
Often, yes. Depositing a payment usually does not close a claim, unless you signed a release. Check what you signed and the deadlines in your policy, then submit a supplement for anything missed.
Many property policies let either side ask for appraisal when you agree the loss is covered but disagree on the amount. Each side picks an appraiser and an umpire settles differences. It is not the right tool for coverage disputes.
If the insurer says the loss is not covered at all, if a deadline to bring a lawsuit is close, or if you believe the insurer acted in bad faith, talk to a licensed Hawaiʻi attorney. Island Claims is not a law firm.
A public adjuster works for you, the policyholder, not the insurance company. We read your policy, document the damage, prepare the claim and handle the back-and-forth with your insurer. Your insurer’s adjuster works for the insurer.
You tell us what happened and send whatever you have: photos, your policy, letters or estimates from the insurer. We explain what we see, what may be missing and what to document next. If we can help, we explain in writing how we are paid before you sign anything. If you do not need us, we say so.
